If you’re anything like me, you like to be prepared for a flight. Whether it’s a short, 2hr flight to a nearby city or a long-haul flight across the globe, it’s essential to have everything you need to make your trip as comfortable as possible.

Several years ago, I wrote a post about packing for a long-haul flight but wanted to update that post to include my current favorites! If you’re in the planning phase or are heading out in the morning, take a quick peek at this checklist – it’ll make your time in the air much more bearable.

Choose a Good Carry-On

Before you start packing anything up, you need to make sure you have the right bag to meet your needs. I currently have 3 different carry-ons I use for different purposes. I have 2 that go under my seat, and one that fits in all overhead compartments. I choose my bag depending on if I have a checked bag, how many precious items I’m carrying, what the airline restrictions are, and how big the airports are.

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside Lightweight Rolling Underseat Compact Carry-On

I use this bag 90% of the time when I’m traveling. It fits under the seat in front of me – even on low-cost carriers. It also offers excellent organization options in the front and side pockets, and has plenty of room in the body to store whatever you need. I don’t mind that it doesn’t have 4 wheels either!

This also makes a great overnight bag if you’re hitting the road for a quick trip. I highly recommend this underseat carry-on bag.

Osprey Tempest 20 Women’s Hiking Backpack

Of course the backpack I use isn’t for sale anymore (Osprey 24/7), but all you really need is a good quality backpack that’s small enough to fit underneath the seat in front of you. The bag should have offer good organization options, and be comfortable to carry for longer periods of time.

I use my Osprey backpack as my personal item when I’ll want to use it at other points during my trip, like hiking or for carrying my camera gear around. Depending on the size, the backpack can be great for overnight/weekend trips as well.

DELSEY Paris Titanium Hardside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Carry-On 19 Inch

If I need a little more room to pack stuff for a multi-day trip, then I pay for a carry-on piece of luggage and bring this little guy. It fits in all overhead compartments I’ve come across, though not as easily when it’s fully expanded. It also has a handy spot to store your laptop and plenty of room for a few days worth of clothes/toiletries. I’ve had it for several years now and it has held up quite nicely.

Carry-On Essentials

Once you have chosen the right carry-on bag for your needs and the restrictions of your airline, it is time to start packing it. Here is a list of what I recommend packing in your carry-on, along with some Amazon links (where appropriate) to help you find them easily:

iPad or Tablet

Entertainment is key, especially on a long-haul flight. Load it up with your favorite movies, tv shows, music, and games to make sure you don’t get bored!

Good Headphones

I actually like to bring wired and wireless headphones on flights – just in case the bluetooth doesn’t work properly. I also prefer noise-cancelling headphones so my ears aren’t ringing for hours after my flight.

Portable Charger

Although many airlines have charging capabilities these days, it’s best to make sure you have all the power you need. I’ve been using Anker products for over 5 years and have always found them to be high-quality.

Sleep Mask

An eye mask is a great addition to your carry-on, as it’ll help block out ambient light (or pesky reading lights) if you’re trying to get some much-needed sleep on your long-haul flight. I’ve been using this one recently and love it!

Toiletries

When I fly, I like to bring a toothbrush, toothpaste, face wipes, hand cream, lip balm, deodorant, and a hairbrush. Due to my chronic illnesses, I also bring eye drops, nasal spray, and a nose bleed kit.

Medicines

I take a lot of medicine, both over the counter and prescription. These must go in your carry-on for safekeeping. I always bring a few extra days worth of medication and I get a letter from my doctor (that lists my prescriptions) in case I get any questions.

Clothes & Valuables

You never know if your bags will make it to you final destination, so it’s a good idea to bring a spare change of clothes (or two) in case of a delay or the dreaded lost luggage situation. I also pack all valuable jewelry for the same reason.

Compression Socks

Compression socks/stockings are essential for long-haul flights as they will help safeguard you against blood clots. I wear them for all flights over two hours. Amazon has several different styles and compression grades to meet everyone’s needs.

Travel Pillow

I have a difficult time sleeping on planes, but it’s next to impossible without a quality pillow to prop my head up with. This is what I’m currently using and am definitely a fan – it helps keep my neck warm too!

Hand Sanitizer

It’s never a bad idea to carry hand sanitizer (or sanitizing wipes) with you on the plane. Clean your area when you sit down and sanitize your hands before eating/drinking.

Reusable Water Bottle

Most airports now have water filling stations. Bring your own reusable bottle and fill up before the flight. Drink often throughout the flight to keep yourself well hydrated.

Shawl or Blanket

Planes can get COLD and those little blankets they give you are never quite enough. Pack a little something extra to help keep you warm during your flight.

I hope you found this list of carry-on essentials helpful! These are the basics that I like to bring with me each time I travel, and they make my trip safer, less stressful, and infinitely more comfortable.
